The honest version — including the months we'd steer our own families away from.
The short answer: Two windows: May–June (green grasslands, snowy peaks, wildflowers) and September (Kanas's golden autumn — the region's single most famous fortnight). July–August is superb in the mountains but brutal in Turpan; winter is −20°C territory.
Kanas and Hemu turn to gold and copper against fresh snowlines — arguably China's finest autumn landscape. Peak color usually runs mid-to-late September. Book everything early; the whole country knows.
Grasslands at their greenest, wildflowers across the Ili and Nalati meadows, comfortable highway temperatures, and Turpan still merely hot rather than punishing.
Perfect in the mountains and at the lakes (20–28°C), and grapes ripen in Turpan — but the depression itself regularly passes 45°C. We schedule Turpan for mornings and lean on the highlands.
Severe and beautiful: −20°C is routine in the north, and Altay's powder snow feeds a growing ski scene. Only for travelers who want that specifically — most services thin out.
Because every tour we run is private, dates and routes stay flexible: we watch the forecast with you and re-order days to chase the clear morning or dodge the downpour. Tell us your travel window and we'll tell you honestly what it will feel like — and how we'd shape the days.
