The short answer: March–June and September–November are ideal: mild, green and comfortable. Chengdu is one of China's cloudiest cities — expect soft grey light, which the pandas love. Summer is hot and humid; winter damp and chilly but rarely freezing.

Comfortable and calm, with Emei's forests turning color in late October. The cloud-sea odds at the Golden Summit improve as the air dries through autumn.
Hot, humid and occasionally stormy — but the pandas simply move to their air-conditioned indoor suites, and the mountain slopes of Emei run 10°C cooler than the city.
Damp cold that hovers above freezing, with the city's teahouses and hotpot at their most inviting. The summit of Emei gets real snow and ice — spectacular, but pack properly.
