Chongqing Travel Guide

A mountain mega-city stacked above two rivers: cyberpunk night views, trains that pass through buildings, ferocious hotpot — and karst wonders two hours out.

Chongqing doesn't do flat. The city climbs and burrows across a peninsula between the Yangtze and Jialing rivers — buildings stacked on buildings, a monorail threading through an apartment tower, cable cars swinging over the water. After dark it becomes one of the world's great night-view cities, with the stilt-house glow of Hongya Cave as its postcard. Add day-trip access to the UNESCO karst bridges of Wulong and the cliff carvings of Dazu, and you have China's most cinematic city break — best navigated, emphatically, by someone else's car.

When to Go

March–May and October–November are best. Summer is famously furnace-hot (35–40°C); winter is mild but wrapped in river fog — which, to be fair, suits the neon.

Getting Around with a Private Driver

Chongqing is China's most disorienting city to self-navigate: streets stack on five levels, GPS gives up, and 'walking distance' can mean 200 vertical metres. A local driver laughs at all of this. For Wulong and Dazu — both around two hours out — a private car is simply the only comfortable option.
